According to people who care about such things, hitchhiking is an activity that separates the tourists from the travellers. Tourists stay in hotels and visit the Opera House. Travellers hope to find a free floor not too far from the city, and visit the sin centres. Tourists catch planes – or, if they’re poor, coaches. Travellers risk life and limb in the pursuit of a less expensive ride.
